Saint John is situated in the south-central portion of the province, along the north shore of the Bay of Fundy at the mouth of the Saint John River.

 

There is a terminal in the harbour for cruise ships as well as for various container ships.

 

In the center of the city is  a narrow gorge, few hundred feet wide that the Saint John River flows into the Bay of Fundy, causing a unique phenomenon called the Reversing Falls. This where the diurnal tides of the bay reverse the water flow of the river for several kilometres. A series of underwater ledges at the narrowest point of this gorge also create a series of rapids.

 

The Arts & Culture sector play a large role in the local economy. Uptown Saint John has several art galleries and is home to several well known artists.

 

Saint John has an industrial infrastructure in the city’s east side including the Irving Oil Refinery which is Canada’s largest oil refinery.

 

The city has a diverse economic industry which include the Port of Saint John, brewery, New Brunswick Power Corporation which operates three electrical generating stations in the region including the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station, molasses company, Bell Aliant, the Horizon Health Network, which operates 5 hospitals in the Saint John area, and numerous IT companies and call centers. There is also a convention center located in Market Square.
